Cullowhee, N.C. – The Western Carolina volleyball team hits the road this weekend for a pair of Southern Conference matches as the Catamounts face Mercer at 6 p.m. Friday and The Citadel at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Friday’s match will air on the SoCon Digital Network with Saturday's match broadcast on ESPN+ (subscription required). Fans can follow both matches with live stats via links on www.catamountsports.com.
Western Carolina is 6-6 overall and 0-1 in league play following a 3-0 home setback to ETSU on Wednesday. MaKenzie White led the Catamounts with eight kills while Meagan Sanchez tallied 12 digs to move into sole possession of 14th place on the Western Carolina career digs list.
Mercer is 7-4 after winning all three of its matches in the Mercer Bears Classic on Sept. 7-8. The Bears were scheduled to play in the Campbell Invitational last weekend but the tournament was canceled due to Hurricane Florence. Friday’s match will be the SoCon opener for the Bears.
The Citadel is 5-6 after a 3-0 non-conference win at South Carolina State on Wednesday. The Bulldogs have wins over Coppin State, Bethune-Cookman Savannah State, Saint Peter’s and South Carolina State and losses to Appalachian State, Florida Atlantic, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston and two setbacks against UNC Asheville. The Citadel hosts UNCG in the SoCon opener for both teams on Friday evening.
Friday’s match is the 23rd all-time meeting between Western Carolina and Mercer with the Catamounts holding a 15-7 edge. Western Carolina leads the all-time series against The Citadel 29-6.
Western Carolina begins a five-match homestand against UNCG on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 6 pm.
