CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team picked up its first two losses of the season on the final day of the Catamount Volleyball Classic Saturday inside the Ramsey Center. Sophomore Jo-Leigh Vervelde was named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the day after averaging a team-high 2.37 kills per set and playing every single point of the tournament for the Catamounts.
WCU opened the day falling to eventual tournament champion Murray State, 3-0, and concluded the day with a 3-0 loss to tournament runner-up Fresno State.
Vervelde led the way against MSU with five kills, six assists and nine digs. Sophomore Kaycey Cermin (4) and freshman Alyssa Zupan (3) were the only other Catamounts to have more than one kill in the match. Junior Cristina Nazario dished out eight assists while junior libero Elyssa Mulheron led the team with 15 digs.
MSU hit .263 as a team and held WCU to its lowest hitting percentage, .000, since Sept. 11, 2012 when the team swung for -.031 against ETSU. Tournament MVP, Kristen Besselsen, led the Racers with 13 kills and a pair of blocks.
Vervelde put down a team-high eight kills and Fresno State while adding 14 assists, nine digs and five blocks. Freshman Savannah Kohlhagen added seven kills and three digs while sophomore Katie O'Connor put down a team-high six blocks. Nazario led the team with 16 assists and Mulheron dug up 11 balls.
WCU improved its hitting percentage to .156 in the second match while Fresno State hit .311 as a team. The Bulldogs had four student-athletes reach 10 kills while setter Brooke Legaux and libero Maggie Eppright were named to the All-Tournament team.
WCU will be back in action this Tuesday, Sept. 1, against mountain rival UNC Asheville. The match starts at 7 pm inside the Ramsey Center and is free for all fans.
