CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team has been in preseason camp for nearly two weeks now as the team prepares for its season opener against Georgia State on Aug. 28. The Catamounts will hold their annual Purple & Gold scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 22 from 1-3 pm inside the Ramsey Center.
Saturday is a busy day in Cullowhee as the site of the “Meet the Cats” fan fest. The volleyball team will open up the festivities from 1-3 pm, with the football team conducting its final preseason scrimmage at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field from 3-5 pm.
During the football scrimmage, student-athletes from various WCU teams will be on the west concourse competing against fans in interactive games, with sponsors of the Athletic department on-hand with promotional items and information. Following the football scrimmage, fans will have the chance to meet the Catamounts with a post-practice autograph and photo session on the West stadium concourse.
The event is open to the public and free of charge. In case of rain, many of the fan fest activities will move inside the Ramsey Center.
The volleyball team returns four starters from the 2014 squad including seniors Elyssa Mulheron and Cristina Nazario and sophomores Jo-Leigh Vervelde and Katie O’Connor. Five freshmen joined the squad this season and have been progressing well throughout the preseason camp.
Head coach Karen Glover has been tasked with filling the roles left behind by departing seniors Addy George, Jordan Timmermann, Caitlin Piechota and Brandi Anderson. Saturday’s scrimmage will be the fans lone chance to catch the team in action prior to the season opener on Aug. 28.
WCU was nearly perfect at home a season ago as the team finished with a 9-1 record inside the Ramsey Center. The Catamounts will open the season by hosting the 2015 Catamount Volleyball Classic with Georgia State, Murray State and Fresno State all traveling to Cullowhee for a round-robin tournament.
