CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team has been on campus for a week preparing for the 2015 season and head coach Karen Glover is pleased with the progress the team has made. The Catamounts have gone through 12 practices, a team building rafting trip down the Nantahala and have helped move in the incoming Western Carolina freshmen.
WCU kicked off preseason preparation on Friday, Aug. 7 and have practiced twice a day over the past week with the exception of a rafting trip on Monday, Aug. 10 and today when the Catamounts participated in the annual freshmen move-in.
"I think things are shaping up well," said Glover when asked how the preseason has been progressing. "The freshmen are learning quickly and that is a good thing because we are going to need them to mature quickly. The combination of the returners and the newcomers is coming along, and everyone is meshing really well. I am pleased with the first week of practices."
The 2015 Catamounts feature five freshmen, five sophomores, two juniors and three seniors. Seniors Elyssa Mulheron, Nicole Ford and Cristina Nazario are looking to lead a young squad that has the opportunity to play for the Southern Conference Championship on their home floor as WCU hosts the 2015 Southern Conference Tournament Nov. 21-23.
"Being a close knit team is also a big focus for programs that I coach," said Glover when describing her team building rafting trip down the Nantahala. "We had really good weather and everyone had a good time so it was a really great experience."
"I've been really pleased with the freshmen's work ethic and their focus and also the upperclassmen being supportive of the freshmen and helping them understand things. Just the way the team has come together I think has been really good," added Glover.
The Catamounts have just two more weeks to prepare for their season opener on Aug. 28. WCU will host the 2015 Catamount Volleyball Classic inside the Ramsey Center as Georgia State, Fresno State and Murray State all travel to Cullowhee for a round-robin tournament. WCU will open up play against GSU at 6:30 on Friday, Aug. 28.
