Catamount Volleyball Preseason Practice #1 -

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina volleyball and fourth-year head coach Karen Glover opened preparations for their 2014 season on Thursday morning with the first practice session of preseason, spanning over two hours in the Ramsey Center auxiliary gymnasium.

The spirited workout included individual and team drills, closing with conditioning work as the squad prepares for its Aug. 29 season opener. The morning practice was followed with an afternoon session in the first of back-to-back two-a-day drills.

"It was really great to be back in the gym today," said Glover. "Over the summer, you get a little bored and a little antsy to get back in there - and I think the players were as well. There was a lot of excitement today. I was really pleased with the energy and intensity of our first practice."

She added, "This preseason, what I'm really looking for is to get this team unified. Looking to get some team bonding in there, making sure we're all on the same page skill-wise, and then starting to run our offensive and defensive systems so that we're all on the same page."

All told, WCU's preseason schedule features 17 practices including six two-a-day sessions. Once classes begin on Monday, Aug. 18, the focus shifts back to a normal practice schedule as the squad eyes its season-opening tournament at UCF in Orlando, Fla. The Catamounts are scheduled to hold an intrasquad, Purple & Gold scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 23 that will be open to the public.
