Cullowhee, N.C. - The Southern Conference volleyball coaches selected a 13-member preseason all-conference team, which includes Western Carolina senior Sara Komosinski. The coaches have also picked WCU to finish fifth in the conference in 2003. Georgia Southern was selected as the favorite to take home this year's regular-season crown.

Georgia Southern, the 2002 regular-season co-champions, led the voting with 120 total points and 10 of 12 possible first place votes. Close on the Eagles' heels is College of Charleston, also a co-champion in 2002 and the winners of last season's SoCon Tournament, which received 102 total points and the two remaining first place votes.

With 12 conference teams now participating in volleyball, the league has been split into north and south divisions. Appalachian State, East Tennessee State, Elon, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga and Western Carolina will be competing in the north division. The College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, Georgia Southern and Wofford will all compete in the south division. In WCU's favor, the Cats posted the best overall and conference record last year among all those in this year's north division (22-12, 13-7) and received the highest number of points in the preseason voting of any other team in the north for 2003.

This is the second consecutive year Komosinski has received the preseason honor. She was additionally named to the all-league team at the conclusion of the 2002 season, finishing the season third in the league in hitting percentage at 33.8 percent and fifth in kills with 421 for 3.57 per game. She also ranked 12th in the league in blocks, knocking down 0.94 per game (111 total), and 17th in digs with 2.96 per game (349 total).

The Catamounts start the 2003 season on the road this weekend as they travel to Charlotte, N.C., for the UNCC tournament. Western will face Akron on Friday, August 29, at 5 pm, then square off against the 49ers at 1:30 pm on Saturday and Florida International at 5 pm. September 5-6, WCU opens its home schedule with the fourth annual Catamount Clash. The Cats will host Coastal Carolina, Savannah State and Tennessee State in the Ramsey Center.
