Mesa, Ariz. – The Western Carolina women’s golf team rebounded in Saturday’s second round of the Clover Cup, trimming 13 strokes off their opening round score of 339 to shoot 326 to remain in 15th out of the 15-team field with a two-round score of 665 entering Sunday’s final round at the par-72, 6,184-yard Longbow Golf Club.
WCU freshman Amy Wooten sits in a tie for 56th overall, following her opening-round 6-over par 78 with an 81 on Saturday for a 36-hole score of 159. Sophomore Hazel Martin was nine strokes better in the second round, countering an 86 with a 5-over par 77 across the second 18 holes to sit in a tie for 67th overall.
Second-year striker Maya White was three strokes better on Saturday, 84 over 87 for a two-day total of 171, tied for 83rd, while junior Brianna Plumer was six-strokes better in the second round, improving on a first-round score of 90 with an 84 for a total of 174. Rounding out WCU’s scoring five is Harper Gilreath in 90th overall with a two-day score of 182.
First-round leader Southern California holds a commanding 13 stroke edge entering Sunday’s final round over second-place Oklahoma, 585-to-598. Kentucky (599) sits in third-place with fellow SEC-foe Mississippi State in fourth at 603 and Houston rounding out the top five in the order at 606.
Southern Conference opponents Mercer sits eighth at 615 and UNCG in 11th with a two-round tally of 623.
Kentucky’s Leonie Bettel at 3-under par 141 carries a three-stroke edge over Jennifer Chang of Southern Cal who has carded an even-par 144 through the first two days at the top of the individual leaderboard. Those two are just ahead of a three-way tie for third at 2-over par, 146.
Paired with golfers from Cincinnati and IUPUI, WCU opens its final round in Sunday’s 8:00 am local time shotgun start between the 13th and 16th holes. Live scoring is available online at BirdieFire.com.
