Greensboro, N.C. - Western Carolina freshman Hazel Martin posted a career-best finish, placing tied for 17th overall to lead the Catamounts to a 11th-place showing at the Starmount Forest Fall Classic which concluded Tuesday at the Starmount Forest Country Club. Martin shot 4-over par, 76, in the final round for a three-round total of 228, the best 54-hole score of her young collegiate career.
Opening on No. 13, Martin carded six pars and a birdie to play her first seven holes on Tuesday at 1-under par before a quadruple bogey relegated her to 3-over. The Brisbane, Australia, native moved back to 2-over par with a second birdie in starting her final nine holes, coming to the clubhouse with six pars and a pair of bogies for the 4-over round.
Martin, who finished with a team-best eight birdies, opened the tournament with a career-low, 1-over par 73 on Monday as a part of her 228.
Senior Amanda Floberg finished with a three-round score of 243 (77-83-83) to place in a tie for 46th overall for WCU, while freshman Maya White and senior Alyssa Morahan finished 55th and 56th, respectively, with scores a stroke apart at 252 (82-87-83) and 253 (85-83-85). Freshman Harper Gilreath rounded out the scoring five in a tie for 59th overall with a score of 263 (86-89-88).
Playing unattached as an individual in her first collegiate tournament, freshman Cameron Wood matched classmate Gilreath's score, finishing tied for 59th overall at 263 (87-85-91).
With four of the top five individual finishers, Campbell cruised to the team championship, shooting a 5-over par, 869. Marshall finished in the runner-up spot with a three-round score of 901. Winthrop finished third, seven-strokes in arrears at 908 with UNCG (911) and William & Mary (916) rounding out the top five.
Tied for second after the second round, Campbell's Stacey White, claimed individual medalist honors with a two-day total of 3-under par, 213, that included a tournament-low round of 69 on Tuesday. Her teammates Ayelen Irizar and Annelie Sjoholm, finished tied for the runner-up spot with matching scores of 2-over par, 218. Winthrop's Chelsea Dantonio slipped into fourth with the fourth Campbell golfer, Desiree Andersson, rounding out the top five individuals.
Western Carolina now turns its attention to its home tournament, the Bill Berg Invitational, on Oct. 16-17 hosted at The Ridges Golf Club in Hayesville, N.C. Led by Floberg's runner-up individual finish, the Catamounts finished second in the first-ever edition of the home events last year with a three-round score of 909.
