2016 Golfweek Program Challenge - Round 1 Results Get Acrobat Reader

Pawley's Island, S.C. - Western Carolina's Alyssa Morahan fired an opening-round, 2-over par, 73, to lead the Catamounts in Sunday's opening round of the 2016 Golfweek Program Challenge. Morahan sits tied for 13th after her first round for the Purple & Gold while WCU ranked ninth as a team at the par-71, 6,042-yard Caledonia Golf & Fish Club.

Paired with golfers from both Gardner-Webb and Xavier, WCU's scoring five opens play on the front nine with tee times starting at 7:30 am.

Opening on the back nine on Sunday, Morahan countered four bogies and one double with five combined birdies for the 2-over round. The North Reading, Mass., native made the turn to the front nine at 3-over par, slipping to 4-over with a bogey on the first hole. The Tampa transfer finished the round with four birdies over her final eight holes, shooting 1-under on the front nine for the opening-round 73.

Senior Ashley Thompson and junior transfer Amanda Floberg both carded rounds of 6-over par, 77, to sit in a tie for 31st overall. Both golfers carded a birdie on the opening day of the season. Senior Bethany Galloway (80) charted a pair of birdies in her first round, sitting in a tie for 60th while sophomore Maddi Caldwell withdrew from Sunday's round.

Boston College leads the 16-team field after shooting 1-under par, 283, on Sunday. Campbell and Jacksonville State are tied for the runner-up spot, seven-strokes off the pace at 290, while Morehead State (299) and Mercer (300) rounds out the top five.

Individually, Boston College's Ailin Li leads the 80-golfer field by a stroke over second-place Valentiana Giraldo of Jacksonville State. Li shot 3-under par, 68, while Giraldo shot 69.

In the combined program challenge, four-time champion Campbell (272 & 290) leads the 16-team field by nine strokes over second-place Jacksonville State (281 & 290), 562-to-571. Boston College sits in third with a combined men's and women's score of 573, followed by Jacksonville (576) and Mercer (580) rounding out the top five.
