Pinehurst, N.C. – Western Carolina freshman Tumi Kúld finished 18th on Tuesday to lead the Catamounts to an eighth-place showing as play concluded in the 2019 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship. Kúld carded a three-day, 7-over par 223 at the conference champion-crowning event held at the par-72, 7,118-yard Pinehurst No. 9.

Following Tuesday’s final round, Kúld was named to the 2019 Southern Conference All-Freshman team, WCU’s first selection to the honorary first-year player squad since J.T. Poston back in 2012. Kúld, a native of Akureyri, Iceland, native paced the Catamount scoring five a total of five times in 2018-19 including posting a career-best top 10 finish in his collegiate debut at The Invitational at the Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. He also led WCU in seasonal stroke average at 76.10.

On Tuesday, Kúld carded three birdies over five holes over par to shoot 3-over, 75, sliding three spots in the final standings. Opening on the back nine, he posted a pair of birdies against two bogeys to make the turn for home at even-par. His third birdie on the par-4 first moved him to 1-under for the round. Kúld came to the clubhouse with two bogeys and one double-bogey for a 4-over finish, 3-over for the day.

Kúld led the Catamounts with nine birdies over the 54-hole event, finishing with a three-day total of 7-over par, 223.

Competing in his final event for WCU, senior George Whitbread carded a score of 7-over par 79 on Tuesday for a three-round tally of 232, sliding seven spots into 33rd overall. Whitbread posted a team-best 33 pars including 13 on Tuesday alone over the three-day tournament.

Sophomore Zach Caudill posted the team’s best final round at 1-over par 73 on Tuesday, moving up one spot into 38th overall with a tournament total of 238. The Wilkesboro, N.C., product was even-par through the first nine holes before countering four bogeys with three birdies on the front nine for the 1-over round. Caudill led WCU in par-5 scoring at 2-under par (4.83).

Rounding out WCU’s scoring five were freshman Louis Theys, down two spots into 39th overall with a total of 244 and sophomore Michael Coe in 40th at 247 combined.

Putting four golfers inside the individual top 10, UNC Greensboro pulled away over the final 18 holes to cruise to its second championship in as many years. The Spartans carded a final-round 12-under par 276 on Tuesday for a total of 853, winning by 12-strokes over runner-up, ETSU (865). Chattanooga finished third at 875 with Furman (880) and Mercer (881) rounding out the top five teams.

Wofford posted a team score of 902 to finish sixth with Samford (909) and WCU (933) rounding out the team standings.

Tied after 54 holes at 11-under par, 205, ETSU’s Shiso Go defeated UNCG’s Nick Lyerly on the second playoff hole to claim medalist honors and secure the SoCon’s automatic bid to an NCAA regional. Go, who trailed by a stroke entering the final 18 holes, posted a tournament-low final round score of 6-under par, 66, to move into the tie with Lyerly who shot each round in the 60s including 67 over the final 18 holes.

Go had just one bogey over 54 holes, posting 12 birdies and a tournament-best 41 pars. Lyerly posted a tournament-leading 18 birdies over 54 holes.

Go and the Spartans, who earned the SoCon's automatic team berth to the NCAA Regionals, will learn their postseason fates Wednesday, May 1. The NCAA selection show will air on the Golf Channel at 9:00 pm ET. WCU concludes its 2018-19 men’s golf season.
