Vero Beach, Fla. – The Western Carolina men’s golf team wrapped up the second day of competition at the Quail Valley Collegiate on Monday afternoon, improving by five strokes as a team but remain in 16th-place in the team standings entering the final round.
Senior George Whitbread leads Western Carolina in a tie for 34th overall, following up Sunday’s opening round 3-over par, 75, with a team-low round of 2-under par, 70, on Monday.
The 54-hole tournament concludes on Tuesday morning with the Catamount scoring five paired with golfers from tournament-host McNeese State, Arkansas-Little Rock, and Texas State. The foursomes will tee-off on the back nine beginning at 9:00 am at the par-72, 7,350-yard Quail Valley Golf Club.
Opening on the back nine on Monday, Whitbread quickly raced out to a 4-under par start with four birdies on his first five holes. A fifth birdie on the par-4 No. 1 left the Colchester, England, native at 5-under for the round with eight to play. A bogey on the par-3 second and a double-bogey on the par-5 third relegated him to 2-under where he finished the round with six consecutive pars.
Whitbread has a two-round score of 145 (75-70) and ranks tied for sixth in the field with a team-best 25 pars over the first 36 holes. He also leads WCU with six birdies over the first two days of play.
Freshman Louis Theys sits in a tie for 69th overall with rounds of 74 and 79 (153).
South Florida (558) leads North Florida (559) by a stroke after 36 holes of play, both placing two individuals inside the top five overall. Arkansas State (563) is third with Michigan State (568) and Jacksonville (571) rounding out the top five.
Ryoto Furuya of first-place South Florida and Blake Elliott of event host McNeese State sit tied atop the individual leaderboard with matching scores of 135. Furuya posted rounds of 67 and 68 while Elliott mirrored in reverse with 68 and 67 to sit atop the leaderboard. All told, there are eight individuals within three strokes of the first-place spot.
