Burlington, N.C. - Western Carolina senior Dylan MacQueen sits in fifth place, just three strokes off the lead after 36 of the scheduled 54 holes at Elon's Phoenix Invitational, hosted at the par-71, 6,867-yard Alamance Country Club. The Catamounts sit in 12th place entering Tuesday's final round, just three strokes outside of the top 10 after shooting rounds of 299 and 285 for a total of 584.
The tournament is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday morning with set tee times off the first and 10th holes beginning at 8:00 am. WCU's scoring five, paired with golfers from Morehead State and Longwood, opens the final round just after 8:00 am.
Opening his first round on the par-5 12th, MacQueen had three birdies and a bogey through his first nine holes to sit at 2-under par with nine holes to play in his first round. Five-consecutive pars were followed by consecutive bogies to move back even par which is where he finished after a birdie on No. 10 and a bogey on No. 11. Even after a birdie on 12 and a bogey on No. 1 accompanied by six pars, MacQueen birdied four of his final nine holes of the opening day to shoot 4-under par, 67, for a two-round total of 138.
All told, MacQueen is tied for the tournament lead with six birdies.
Freshman Michael Coe sits in a tie for 59th with a two-round total of 7-over par, 149, with senior Jackson Bishop and junior George Whitbread are tied for 65th a stroke back at 8-over par, 150. Rounding out WCU's scoring five is freshman Chandler Metz in 94th at 161 (86-75).
Tournament host Elon holds a nine-stroke lead over a two-way tie for the runner-up spot between Radford and High Point. The Phoenix posted rounds of 284 and 274 for a 36-hole score of 10-under par, 558, while the Highlanders and Panthers both shot 1-under par team scores of 567. Appalachian State and George Washington are tied for fourth-place to round out the top five teams, both shooting matching even-par scores of 568.
George Washington's Adrian Castagnola holds a two-stroke lead over a three-way tie for second, posting a 7-under par round of 135 (65-70) between Joe Muschong of Morehead State, Elon's William Harwood, and Eric Edwards of George Mason.
Play concludes on Tuesday morning with the final 18 hole round.
