CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women’s basketball fell to visiting Campbell 63-37, in the Catamounts home opener, Friday in the Ramsey Center.
Campbell benefited from nine three-pointers in the contest and holding the Catamounts to five points in the second period, to take charge of the game.
Turning Point:
Trailing by only four, 18-14, after the first period, Western Carolina was outscored by Campbell 12-5 in the second period and could only muster a total of 19 points in the final two periods of the game while the Camels scored a combined 33 points in the final two periods.
Individual Leaders:
- Freshman forward Jewel Smalls had a strong performance logging in the first double-figure scoring performance of her career with 12 points. She also added six rebounds.
- Fellow freshman Kayla Brown came off the bench to put in some work with a solid six points, four rebounds and three blocks. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field.
- Campbell’s Lauren-McNamara-Clement came off the bench to lead all scorers with 13 points.
Inside the Box Score:
- Campbell led for 37:58 minutes of the game. The Catamounts led just once, by one, with 7:41 left in the first period.
- Western Carolina had a strong performance to close out the first period going on a 9-0 run to close out the period and pull within four of the Camels, 18-14.
- The Catamounts’ put themselves in a hole in the second period as WCU scored just five points in the period to Campbell’s 12.
- Campbell shot 42.9 percent for the game, including 50 percent in the third period, for which they outscored WCU 21-10. Western Carolina shot 28.6 percent for the game.
- Campbell outrebounded WCU 37 to 24.
- The Camels got 36 points off the bench.
- Campbell hit nine three-pointers in the game to Western Carolina’s two.
- Each team had five blocks.

- Western Carolina has now lost four-straight to Campbell.
- Western Carolina’s freshman and one newcomer have scored 59 of the Catamounts 95 points in the first two games.
- After two games, Smalls is averaging 10.5 points per game.
