Greensboro, N.C. – Sophomore Merry Gebel recorded her eighth double-double of the season as Western Carolina swept UNCG 3-0 in Fleming Gymnasium on Friday evening. The Catamounts won by scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-23.

Western Carolina is 7-7 overall and 1-0 in league play while UNCG drops to 6-9 and 0-1.

Gebel had a team-best 14 kills and had 11 digs. Senior Meagan Sanchez had a team-best 14 digs followed by classmate Abigail Veit with 12. Junior Hannah Price dished out 26 assists.

Maria Esch paced UNCG with 12 kills and 14 digs.

The Catamounts raced out to a 13-5 lead in the first set and led by no fewer than six points for the rest of the stanza.

With the second set tied at six, the Catamounts scored four straight points for a 10-6 advantage. UNCG trimmed the lead to two, 10-8 before an 8-2 run capped by a Sanchez service ace gave the visitors an 18-10 advantage. The Spartans pulled within five, 23-18, on an Esch kill but the Catamounts closed out the set for a 2-0 lead in the match.

UNCG scored the first six points of the third set but WCU responded with a 10-2 run as consecutive Veit service aces gave the Catamounts a 10-8 lead. The Spartans claimed a 17-14 advantage before the Catamounts answered with a 5-0 run to take a 19-17 advantage. After UNCG knotted the set at 23, an Aleah Keaton kill followed by a block by Keaton and Haley Multerer concluded the match. The third set featured 12 ties and five lead changes.

Western Carolina remains on the road Saturday, traveling to Furman for a 7 p.m. first serve. The match will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network and will also have free live stats.
