Boone, N.C. – Senior Abigail Veit had a season-high 16 kills, but Western Carolina dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision against Appalachian State on Thursday evening at the Appalachian Invitational. The Mountaineers won the match by scores of 25-11, 22-25, 28-26 and 25-14.

Appalachian State improves to 3-5 while Western Carolina drops to 2-5.

Veit’s 16 kills surpassed her previous season-best of 15 against Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 6. The Cary, N.C. product also had two service aces. Hannah Price had a team-best 34 assists as well as two solo blocks. Meagan Sanchez finished with 22 digs, the fourth match this season that the Bristow, Va. native has had 20-plus digs and third time that she has finished with 22 digs in 2019.

Emma Longley led Appalachian State with 23 kills followed by Kara Spicer with 18, Victoria Wilform with 13 and Grace Morrison with 10. Sam Bickley recorded a double-double with 53 assists and 10 digs. Emma Reilly had a match-high 27 digs.

Appalachian State got off to a strong start in the opening set as the Mountaineers hit .500 to claim an early lead in the match.

With the second set tied at 16, Western Carolina claimed two straight points and didn’t relinquish the lead for the remainder of the set as a 25-22 win tied the match at 1.

The third set featured eight ties and six lead changes. After Appalachian State grabbed a 26-25 edge, the Catamounts evened the frame at 26. The Mountaineers scored the next two points to win the set and claim a 2-1 lead.

The Mountaineers used a 4-0 run and a 5-0 run to take an 11-2 lead in the fourth set as WCU would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Western Carolina faces a pair of Power 5 opponents on Friday. The Catamounts and Iowa State square off at Noon before WCU faces NC State at 4 pm.
