Gadsden, Ala. – Juniors Abigail Veit and Aleah Keaton both finished in double figures in kills but Western Carolina was unable to defeat Jacksonville State in a 3-1 setback in the final match of the Gamecock Classic on Saturday afternoon. Western Carolina is 6-4 overall follow the three-match tournament.
Addie Halverson posted a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs to lead Jacksonville State. Lena Kindermann recorded 12 kills followed by Sadie Anderson with 10. Ashley Clingan led the Gamecocks with 15 digs.
Veit and Sanchez were named to the All-Tournament team along with Jacksonville State’s Makenzie Rombach, Clingan and Kindermann, Bradley’s Alissa Schovanec and Hannah Angeli along with Chardea Bertholot of Mississippi Valley State.
After a kill by Keaton tied the opening set at 14, Jacksonville State went on an 8-2 run for a 22-16 lead. Western Carolina pulled to within three, 22-19, thanks to two Jacksonville State attack errors and a Sanchez service ace. A pair of Gamecock errors brought the Catamounts to within two, 24-22, before Halverson ended the set with a kill.
The Catamounts opened the second set on a 12-2 run and led by no fewer than six points as they tied the match with a 25-18 win.
Trailing 22-20, a Western Carolina attack error sparked a 5-0 Jacksonville State run to close out the third set as the hosts earned a 25-22 win. The third set featured 11 ties and six lead changes with the largest lead being four points.
Jacksonville State opened the fourth set on an 8-3 run before a Gamecock attack error brought the Catamounts within two, 14-12. After Jacksonville State extended its lead to 21-16, Western Carolina took advantage of three straight Gamecock attack errors to pull within two but would get no closer for the remainder of the set.
Western Carolina travels to mountain rival UNC Asheville on Tuesday with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
