HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The Western Carolina volleyball team dropped is final match of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic Saturday afternoon to South Dakota, 3-0. Freshman MaKenzie White led the way for WCU as she tallied eight kills in the loss.
The Catamounts drop to 1-5 on the season while South Dakota improved to 2-4 with the victory.
Senior Katie O’Connor and sophomores Abigail Veit and Aleah Keaton all finished with six kills in the match. Keaton added thre blocks while O’Connor and Veit each had two. Veit also chipped in nine digs to finish second on the squad behind freshman setter Hannah Price who had 13 digs in the match. Price captured a double-double as she dished out 25 assists as well.
WCU hit just .096 as a team while South Dakota compiled a .330 hitting percentage.
The Coyotes won in straight-sets taking the opening period 25-13 before taking the final two sets 25-18 and 25-17, respectively.
The Catamounts will return to the mainland and head west for the ISATAP Collegiate Cup Invitational next weekend hosted by Alabama State. WCU will face Jacksonville, Southeastern Louisiana and Alabama State, Sept. 8-9.
