CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team fell in its final two matches of the Catamount Volleyball Classic Saturday. Towson, who finished 3-0 at the tournament, dropped WCU 3-1 in the Catamounts first action of the day while Jacksonville State upended WCU 3-0 in the final match of the tournament.
Youth once again led the way as sophomore Abigail Veit and freshmen Gabby Gray and MaKenzie White each finished with 15 or more kills over the two matches. Veit posted a double-double in the opening match with 10 kills and 11 digs against the Tigers while finishing with nine kills and 11 digs against the Gamecocks. Her effort earned her a spot on the Catamount Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team.
Gray had nine kills, five digs and three blocks in the loss to Towson before adding seven kills, 12 digs and two blocks against the Gamecocks. White had six kills and a pair of blocks against Towson and chipped in nine kills and four blocks versus Jacksonville State.
Sophomore Meagan Sanchez led the team with 20 digs in the opening match before digging up 13 balls versus the Gamecocks.
Senior Jo-Leigh VerVelde suffered a lower leg injury in the third set of the match with Towson and finished with 16 assists, six digs, a block and a kill. Freshman Hannah Price came on in relief and finished with 16 assist as well while digging up six digs. Price dished out 28 assists in the three set loss to JSU while chipping in 12 digs, two blocks and a pair of kills.
Senior Katie O'Connor had a solid day blocking as she had four blocks in the opening match including a solo stop before blocking a match-high six attacks against the Gamecocks.
Towson jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Catamounts with 25-11 and 25-15 set wins before the Catamounts responded with a 25-21 third set victory. Without their starting setter, the Catamounts battled in the fourth set but fell 25-21.
Jacksonville State squeaked out a 25-22 opening set victory before dominating the second set en route to a 25-14 win. WCU once again came out swinging in the third set but the Gamecocks hung on for a 26-24 victory.
The Catamounts will now turn their attention to the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic. WCU opens the tournament by taking on the host Hawai'i at 1 am (EST) Friday, Sept. 1.
