MACON, Ga. - Playing in a rare Friday afternoon match, the Western Carolina volleyball team fell 3-1 at Mercer in the Catamounts second to last regular season match of the season. The match featured a pair of lopsided sets, one of which went WCU’s way and the other going in Mercer’s favor, a set that went into extra points and an opening set that was close throughout. Sophomore Alyssa Zupan led the Catamount attack with 14 kills while junior Katie O’Connor added 12.
Zupan finished with a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs while also contributing three blocks. O’Connor added a team-high six blocks to her start line while hitting at a .474 clip.
Junior setter Jo-Leigh VerVelde dished out 38 assists while also digging up 11 balls. VerVelde also had four kills and a team-high three service aces. Freshman libero Meagan Sanchez led the team with 20 digs while picking up a pair of service aces.
The Bears were paced by Morgan Macgilvary and Emily Krogman who had 18 and 16 kills, respectively.
The loss moves WCU to 10-18 on the year and 5-10 in Southern Conference play while the Bears improved to 15-12 overall and 7-8 in league action.
Mercer won the close first set 25-20 before escaping a very tight second set 28-26. The third set was all Catamounts who dominated in route to a 25-17 win before Mercer closed out the match with a strong 25-16 victory.
The Catamounts will now travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on The Citadel in both teams regular season finales. The match is set for 4 pm and will air live on ESPN3.
