ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team fell 3-0 to Winthrop Tuesday evening in Rock Hill, S.C. The Catamounts struggled offensively hitting just under .100 for the match. Junior Katie O’Connor led the way with eight kills while registering three blocks.

The Eagles won in straight sets 25-19, 25-20 and 25-21. The loss drops WCU’s record to 5-7 while Winthrop improved to 6-5.

Freshman Abigail Veit added seven kills to the offensive attack while digging up 10 balls on the defensive side of the net. Reigning Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week freshman Meagan Sanchez had a team-high 14 digs.

Junior Reeve Reinsborough and sophomore Dakoda Hawkins continued splitting the setting duties. Hawkins finished with 13 assists while Reinsborough had nine.

Junior Kaycey Cermin and sophomore Moea Osbey tied for the team lead in blocks with four as Cermin had four block assists and Osbey had a solo stop and three assists.

The Catamounts had a strong showing from the service line as they put down seven service aces compared to Winthrop’s three. Cermin and Hawkins each had two while Veit, Osbey and Reinsborough each tallied one.

WCU will have a week off to prepare for its final non-conference match of the year at UNC Asheville on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 pm.
