TAMPA, Fla. - The Western Carolina volleyball team dropped its final two matches at the USF Classic in Tampa, Fla., Saturday afternoon. Juniors Jo-Leigh VerVelde and Katie O'Connor were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts over the four matches. WCU fell 3-1 in their opening match Saturday to Florida Atlantic before dropping a 3-0 contest to New Mexico.
The losses drop WCU's record to 3-4 on the year as the Catamounts look to return to the win column Tuesday evening against former Southern Conference rival Appalachian State. The Mountaineers will travel to Cullowhee Tuesday night for a 6 pm contest.
Junior Kaycey Cermin and freshman Abigail Veit led the way for the Catamounts offensively against FAU but it was WCU's blocking that stole the show as the Catamounts totaled 19.0 team blocks. The 19 blocks rank third in the WCU record book for most blocks in a single game.
O'Connor led the blocking game as she stuffed 12 FAU attempts including one solo stop. The 11 block assists rank tied for fourth in the WCU record book while the 12 total blocks is also tied for fourth.
Cermin added seven blocks including two solo stoppers and VerVelde had five block assists. VerVelde dished out 28 assists and had 11 digs for another double-double while freshman Meagan Sanchez led the team in digs with 20.
Veit came up just short of a double-double with eight kills and 16 digs.
FAU took the opening two sets 25-13 and 27-25 before WCU put a tally on the board with a 25-23 victory in the third set. The fourth and final set was tight but FAU pulled out the 25-22 win.
New Mexico came out on fire against WCU and swept the Catamounts 25-17, 25-12 and 25-6.
Sophomore Alyssa Zupan led the offense with six kills while O'Connor picked up a team-high three blocks.
VerVelde dished out 13 assists in the match while Sanchez dug up a team-high 11 balls.
