CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women’s tennis picked up its second straight win at home with a 5-2 victory over visiting South Carolina State Monday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

 

TURNING POINT:

Western Carolina won the doubles point, winning two of three, and went on to take four of the six singles matches for the win.

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • With the score sitting at 2-1 after South Carolina State took a win at No. 6 singles, junior Jordan Strickland (7-6, 5-3) and senior Savannah Taranto (6-3, 6-4) and No. 1 and No. 4 singles for the key third and fourth wins of the match.
  • Lauren McCall had the only three-set match dropping the first set 6-3 before battling back to win the ensuing sets 6-0, 6-1.

 

NOTES:

  • Rookie Jacy Smith closed out the match picking up a win at No. 2 singles. She improves to 6-3 on the season holding down the most wins by a Catamount this season.
  • Strickland now has 29 career wins and sits in third place for most wins in the WCU record books. She needs three wins to move into second place.

Western Carolina will host Winston-Salem State at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
