CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women’s tennis won its home opener Saturday defeating visiting Gardner-Webb 5-2 at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

 

TURNING POINT:

The Catamounts swept doubles to go up 1-0 early and went on to take four of the six singles matches for the win.  

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • After sweeping the doubles handily the Catamounts went to work individually.
  • Lauren McCall put WCU up 2-0 early taking a win at No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-4.
  • Junior Jordan Strickland clinched the match at No. 1 singles in a three-set battle. After dropping the first set, she fought back to take the final two sets 7-5, 6-3.

NOTES:

  • Jacy Smith closed out the match picking up a win at No. 2 singles. She improves to 5-3 on the season.
  • Strickland now has 28 career wins and sits in third place for most wins in the WCU record books. She needs three wins to move into second place.

UPCOMING:

Western Carolina will host South Carolina State at 2 p.m. Monday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
