ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Western Carolina women’s tennis dropped its first match of the 2019 season falling 5-2 to in-state rival UNC Asheville Saturday at the Asheville Racquet Club.
UNC Asheville set the tone for the match taking the doubles point winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Bulldogs sealed the match winning four of the six singles matches.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Western Carolina picked up one win in doubles with the combination of Jordan Strickland and Savannah Taranto defeating UNCA’s Christin Louw and Emily Sidor 6-2.
- Catamount rookie Jacy Smith picked her first win, in the spring season, as a Catamount knocking off Sidor 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
- At No. 6 singles another Western Carolina freshman earned her first spring season win as Julia Pezzuco downed Bulldog Anastasia Horvat 6-2, 6-1.
- Junior Lauren McCall lost in three sets. She lost the first set to Kylee Shipley 6-7, before bouncing back to take set two 6-3. She dropped the third set in a closely contested contest 7-5.
Western Carolina will stay in the state of North Carolina for their second match of the season traveling to former Southern Conference member Appalachian State on Sunday. The match is set for 2 p.m.
