Cullowhee, N.C. – Saturday’s baseball nonconference series opener between Western Carolina and St. John’s has been cancelled due to poor playing conditions on the surface at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium and unfavorable forecasts through the evening hours. The two teams will attempt to play a doubleheader on Sunday (Feb. 24), first pitch time to be determined.

Both games of the WCU-St. John’s baseball Sunday doubleheader can be followed online with live stats at CatamountSports.com and updates through Twitter, @Catamounts, and @WCUCatamountBSB.

WCU’s field crew was working feverishly to prepare for the anticipated Noon first pitch on Saturday when a large rain cell moved over the field. The heavy clouds dropped a lot of water on the already soggy field before the tarp – which pulled by players from both teams in a collective effort – was able to be re-positioned over the infield.

Around Noon, the tarp was again removed to survey the damage done by the rain. After a meeting with the both head coaches and field crew, the decision to cancel Saturday’s game was made, pushing the series to Sunday.

Fans are encouraged to stay abreast of the weather conditions and updates on any additional game-time changes online at CatamountSports.com and through the department’s official social media channels such as Twitter using the handle, @Catamounts.
