Pinehurst, N.C. – Freshman Tumi Kúld climbed eight spots in Monday’s second round at the 2019 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship, leading Western Carolina in a two-way tie for 15th-place after 36 holes of competition. WCU remains in eighth place at the par-72, 7,118-yard course, Pinehurst No. 9.

Kúld countered three bogeys with three birdies on Monday to post the even-par round of 72 for a two-day total of 148. Bogeys on the par-4 first and par-4 fifth left the Akureyri, Iceland, native at 2-over par before a birdie on the par-4 sixth left him making the turn to the back at 1-over. Consecutive birdies on the 10th and 11th holes moved Kúld to 1-under par where he remained with six-straight pars before a third bogey on the par-4 18th left him at even-par, 72.

Catamount senior George Whitbread advanced three spots on Monday, slicing three strokes off of his first-round score with a 3-over par 75. The Colchester, England, product countered five total bogeys with a pair of birdies, shooting 1-over on the front and 2-over on the back for a two-round total of 153.

Rounding out WCU’s scoring five are freshman Louis Theys in a two-way tie for 37th overall at 162 (77-85) with sophomores Zach Caudill (165) and Michel Coe (168) in 39th and 40th, respectively.

Defending tournament champion UNC Greensboro remained in the lead but saw its day-one advantage shrink by two strokes as it will enter Tuesday’s final round of the 2019 SoCon Men’s Golf Championship with a four-stroke lead over second-place ETSU. The Spartans posted a two-round score of 1-over par 577 with ETSU four strokes in arrears at 5-over par, 581.

Chattanooga jumped two spots on Monday into third place, six strokes off the lead at 583, with Furman and Mercer sitting in a tie for fourth overall at 588. Rounding out the team standings after 36 holes are Wofford in sixth at 603 followed by Samford (610) and WCU (627).

UNCG’s Nick Lyerly turned in his second-consecutive round of 3-under par, 69 – his fourth-straight sub-par round at the SoCon Championship – to move up one spot on the leaderboard with a 6-under par, 138. Lyerly has a one-stroke lead over runner-up Shisho Go of ETSU at 139 (69-70) and a two-stroke edge over third-place Oliver Simonsen of Chattanooga who jumped six spots with a second-round score of 68 and a two-day total of 140.

Teams will tee-off holes No. 1 and 10 on Tuesday beginning at 7:30 am. Paired with golfers from Samford, WCU’s scoring five will start on the back nine on Hole No. 10. Live scoring is available online at GolfStat.com.
