Los Angeles, Calif. – Western Carolina softball won a thrilling 3-2 nightcap victory against host Loyola Marymount Friday at the LMU Tournament after falling 10-0, in five innings, to New Mexico earlier in the day.
New Mexico 10, Western Carolina 0 (5)
New Mexico scored three runs in the top of the first, with two outs, and plated seven runs in the fourth to shorten the game to five innings.
How it Happened
The Lobos took advantage of a walk and back-to-back doubles to push across a total of three runs in the top of the first all with two outs.
Western Carolina looked like it might be poised to get some of those runs back getting the first two baserunners on in the bottom of the first but stranded them both.
New Mexico exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth including a grand-slam.
Twice Western Carolina had a runner at second base.
The Catamounts did flash some glove turning a slick double play in the third inning when a single was hit to right field and the runner at third was thrown out in a rundown going home and then the runner at second was also taken down in the play.
WCU had two hits in the game while the Lobos had seven.
Inside the Box Score
Junior hurler Kinsey Liscio suffered her second loss of the season falling to 4-2 on the year. She went three innings giving up seven runs on six hits and striking out four.
Sophomore Kayla Brewer closed out the game giving up three runs on one hit.
Western Carolina 3, Loyola Marymount 2
With the score tied 1-1, Western Carolina took advantage of bases loaded when sophomore Addie Pate hit a two-RBI single to right field to give WCU a 3-1. It would be just enough insurance as Loyola Marymount would plate one run in the bottom of the fifth.
How it Happened
Western Carolina scratched the scoreboard first on a two-out solo home run by senior Shaina Reed.
Loyola Marymount tied the game in the bottom of the third off an RBI single. The Lions were held to just one run when a second LMU runner was thrown out at third on the same play.
Sophomore Addie Pate’s two-RBI single, with bases loaded, put the Catamounts back on top 3-1 in the fourth inning.
The Lions scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, to cut WCU’s lead to 3-2 after a passed ball moved the runner to third and she scored when LMU hit an RBI single to right field.
Loyola Marymount had the tying run at first base but Catamount pitcher Reed forced a fly out to center field to end the game.
Inside the Box Score
Reed got the call to the pitching circle tossing a complete game. She gave up just one earned a run, 10 hits and struck out four walking just one batter. She improves to 2-4 on the year.
Western Carolina strung together five hits in the game while LMU had 10.
Western Carolina had solid defensive plays in the contest including a strikeout and then run down in the first to end the inning and runner thrown out at third trying to leg out an extra base in the third.
