Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina sophomore Merry Gebel posted her team-leading 14th double-double of the season as the Catamounts swept Chattanooga 3-0 in Southern Conference volleyball action Friday evening in the Ramsey Center. WCU won by scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-18.

Western Carolina improves to 15-9 overall and 9-2 in the Southern Conference. Chattanooga drops to 5-18 and 0-10.

Gebel had a team-best 10 kills and was credited with 10 digs. MaKenzie White recorded nine kills and had a team-best five block assists. Reigning SoCon Defensive Player of the Month Meagan Sanchez finished with 12 digs. Hannah Price had a match-best 33 assists. As a team, the Catamounts recorded eight blocks.

Maia Rackel led Chattanooga with a match-high 12 kills. Megan Kaufman led the Mocs with 16 digs.

The opening set featured four ties and three lead changes. With the score tied at 4, WCU scored three of the next four points before the visitors pulled within a point, 7-6. WCU used a 10-4 run capped by a block by Price and White for a 17-10 lead. The Mocs got no closer than six points for the remainder of the first set.

Chattanooga opened the second set on a 3-0 run before a Sanchez service ace tied the stanza at 3. A Gebel kill gave the hosts an 8-6 advantage. The Catamounts went on a 15-4 run for a 23-11 lead after a block. An attack error by the Mocs ended the set.

WCU stormed out to an 11-7 lead in the third set and pushed its lead to 19-8 following a Haley Multerer kill. Chattanooga sliced the Catamount lead to seven, 21-14, before two straight WCU points. A pair of Rackel kills allowed Chattanooga to pull within six, 23-17. The teams traded the next two points before a Gebel kill ended the match.

Western Carolina hosts Mercer on Saturday at 6 p.m. to conclude a four-match homestand.
