Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina completed the season sweep of UNCG on Friday evening with a 3-0 win over the Spartans in the Ramsey Center on Friday evening. The Catamounts won the match by scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-23.

WCU improves to 13-9 and 7-2 while UNCG drops to 9-14 and 3-6. The Catamounts downed the Spartans 3-0 in Greensboro in the SoCon opener on Sept. 27.

Merry Gebel led Western Carolina with 14 kills. Abigail Veit had her 10th double-double of the year with 13 kills and 11 digs and Meagan Sanchez posted a team-best 22 digs. Hannah Price dished out a match-best 38 assists.

Maria Esch led the Spartans with a match-best 19 kills. Mandy Garvens had 22 digs while Grace Howell had 11 and Gabriele McHugh tallied 10. McHugh had two service aces.

The Catamounts opened the first set on a 6-2 run capped by a Veit kill before the Spartans tied the stanza at 11 on an Elayne Grisbee kill. Consecutive MaKenzie White kills sparked a 6-1 run as the Catamounts led by no fewer than four points for the rest of the set.

With the second set tied at 6, WCU went on a 10-4 run capped by a Veit kill for a 16-10 advantage. The Spartans crept within four, 16-12, before WCU tallied three straight points. The Catamounts led by as many as nine points down the stretch and clinched the set thanks to a Spartan attack error.

The Spartans broke an 8-8 tie with a 5-0 run for a 13-8 advantage in the third set. An Esch kill gave the visitors a 17-12 lead before the Catamounts went on a 10-2 run for a 22-19 lead after a block by Price and Aleah Keaton. Kills by Emily Keilen and two by Esch brought the visitors within a point before Haley Multerer closed out the match with a kill.

Western Carolina is back in action on Saturday, hosting Furman at Noon in the Ramsey Center. Fans attending Saturday’s match can pick up any remaining ducks for the fourth annual Great Catamount Duck Race presented by State Farm agent Mike Columbo inside the Ramsey Center beginning at 11 a.m.
