Wilmington, N.C. – Western Carolina completed a perfect weekend at the UNCW Hampton Inns Classic on Saturday as the Catamounts defeated the Seahawks 3-1 on Saturday afternoon inside Hanover Hall. The Catamounts won by scores of 25-19, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-19.

Western Carolina improves to 6-7 overall with its fourth straight win following a pair of 3-2 wins over Drake and North Carolina A&T on Friday and a 3-0 blanking of UNC Asheville on Tuesday.

Abigail Veit posted a double-double with a match-best 18 kills along with 19 digs and earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Merry Gebel tallied 15 kills. Meagan Sanchez was credited with 17 digs. Hannah Price finished with a double-double thanks to 49 assists and 16 digs. Price and Sanchez were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Madison Peters led UNCW with 15 kills. Katie Lanz had 24 assists while Anna Weissmann had 26 digs.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set following a Kendall Bender kill before WCU evened the set at 9 as a result of a UNCW error. With the Seahawks leading 14-12, WCU used a 6-0 run for an 18-14 lead and led by no fewer than two points the rest of the set.

A Peters kill sparked a 6-1 UNCW run to close out the second set and even the match at 1.

The Catamounts opened the third set on a 9-1 run before the Seahawks tied the score at 14 thanks to a Jamie Thomas kill. After the Seahawks took a 23-22 lead on a Bender service ace, the Catamounts answered with a Gebel kill and a UNCW error to lead 24-23. UNCW tied the set with a Bender kill before WCU claimed the set with kills by Gebel and Veit.

WCU broke a 10-10 deadlock in the fourth set with an 11-3 run capped by a Veit kill for a 21-13 edge. The Seahawks pulled to within four, 22-18, before the Catamounts closed out the match with three of the next four points.

Western Carolina opens Southern Conference play next weekend, traveling to UNCG on Friday and Furman on Saturday.
