Cullowhee, N.C. – The Catamount Club, Western Carolina Athletics’ fundraising arm, not only achieved but also exceeded its 2017-18 annual fund scholarship fundraising goal of $1.55 million to benefit Catamount student-athletes scholarships, finishing the fiscal year at $1.57 million.

All told for the fiscal year 2017-18 inclusive of donations to the Catamount athletic scholarship fund, Endowed Scholarships, and sport-specific contributions, the Catamount Club raised over $2.55 million which is another all-time fundraising record for Western Carolina Athletics.

In addition to the $1.57 million raised for student-athlete scholarships in the annual fund, fundraising activities in 2017-18 were highlighted by the improvements to the weight room in the Jordan-Phillips Field House with the David and Marie Brinkley Athletic Weightlifting Facility. With the second-annual “Giving Tuesday” initiative through the Catamount Club, WCU’s Sports Medicine was able to purchase four Normatec Pulse recovery systems and two Compex muscle stimulator units for recovery and treatment of student-athletes.

Donor gifts over the past year also helped create and bolster endowed scholarships for WCU student-athletes, as well as receiving a lead gift from Tony and Lynne Zande towards the new indoor golf practice facility in Camp Lab Gym.

“On behalf of our nearly 350 Catamount student-athletes, thank you,” said Ryan Jones, Assistant Athletic Director for Development and Director of the Catamount Club. “The outpouring of philanthropic support to positively impact our student-athletes at WCU is not only humbling, but also impressive. The gifts of these donors allows WCU Athletics to continue to move forward in achieving comprehensive success both on and off the fields and courts of play. Without the sustained record-breaking support of Catamount Club members over the past few years, we would not be where we are today in our mission to watch these student-athletes experience success while donning the Purple & Gold.”

Jones added, “Not only are these scholarship gifts needed to help the trajectory of WCU Athletics, but also we have experienced the tremendous leadership generosity of some very loyal supporters to help WCU be the best place for the student-athlete experience in the SoCon through some facility enhancements.”
