With the loss …

- It halts Western Carolina’s two-game winning streak and two-game win streak over Samford at home marking the first loss in Cullowhee to the Bulldogs since 2012 … It was also the second-straight loss to the ‘Dogs in the head-to-head series;

- WCU dropped to 7-13 in its final home game of a season since 2000 which includes a 3-5 record under head coach Mark Speir … the Catamounts also dropped to 7-13 in games played on Hall of Fame day, relegated to a third-consecutive loss in games where the latest Hall of Fame inductees are recognized;

- Relegates WCU to a 2-6 finish in SoCon play and an eighth overall finish in conference standings.

Postgame Notes:

- Redshirt sophomore Caleb Ferguson took Samford’s opening kickoff back for a career-long 72-yard return … It was also the team’s longest kickoff return of the season, eclipsing a 33-yard return by Daquan Patten vs. North Greenville and his own 32-yard return at The Citadel;

- For a third time this season, Western Carolina scored on its first offensive play from scrimmage in Saturday’s home loss to Samford … QB Tyrie Adams connected with Donnavan Spencer for a 25-yard pitch-and-catch following Ferguson’s long kickoff return … Previously, Adams connected with freshman WR Jaylin Young on a 69-yard scoring strike on a flea-flicker in a road loss at Wofford … Adams connected with Spencer for a 78-yard pass play on a wheel route out of the backfield on WCU’s opening offensive play at VMI

- With the Adams-to-Spencer touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage, Western Carolina has scored on its opening possession in the last seven-consecutive games – and in eight of the team’s 11 games this season including five touchdowns and two field goals;

- Adams added to his school-record career passing touchdown tally with his 64th career scoring strike … His 64 career passing TDs move him into a tie with former Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman (64, 2012-15) for most career passing scores in the Southern Conference history … It was also the 82nd touchdown he has been responsible for in his career, giving Adams sole possession of sixth-place in SoCon history, breaking the tie with former App State QB Richie Williams (81, 2002-05);

- Finishing the game with 183 passing yards, Adams now has a WCU career-record 8,866 career yards, fourth in SoCon history … He added 21 rushing yards to push his career total to 2,519 yards, fifth in the program record books … His 204 total yards give him 11,385 yards, fifth in the conference record books;

- WCU’s offense was held to just 251 total yards on Saturday – the third-lowest output of the season … With just a total of 70 rushing yards, it is the fourth time this season WCU failed to reach the 100-yard mark while also halting a streak of back-to-back games with a 100-yard individual rusher;

- Western Carolina’s defense recovered three fumbles in Saturday’s loss to Samford … Over the past three games, WCU’s defenders have recovered EIGHT fumbles (4 at VMI; 1 vs. ETSU; 3 vs. Samford) … Adding the interception at VMI, WCU has NINE total takeaways over the past three games – however, the Catamounts have only managed to convert those turnovers into 20 total points … Over the past five games, WCU has FORCED a total of nine fumbles;

- In limiting Samford to a combined 138 passing yards – over 100-yards off the Bulldogs’ seasonal average and the second-lowest passing output from their air-raid scheme – it represented the eighth-time this season that WCU had held an opponent under 200 passing yards on the season;

- Junior linebackers Ty Harris and Trevor Childers both finished with a career-high in tackles in Saturday’s game … Harris bested his previous career-high of 14 coming in last year’s road game at Samford with 17 total stops … Childers improved upon his previous high of 11 which occurred twice, most recently against Gardner-Webb earlier this season with 16 tackles … the dueling 17 and 16 tackles by Harris and Childers also marked the most by a Catamount since Mitchell Chancey had 19 in 2018;
