Cullowhee, N.C. – It is a showdown of Southern Conference volleyball unbeatens on Wednesday evening as Western Carolina welcomes conference rival ETSU to the Ramsey Center for a 6 p.m. match.

The match will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) and will also have free live stats both linked on www.catamountsports.com. WCU students that are in attendance can enjoy free food from Speedy’s Pizza, Dunkin’ Donuts and Bojangles’ (while supplies last).

Western Carolina is 12-7 overall and 6-0 in the league after the Catamounts won their 10th straight match Saturday evening with a 3-1 triumph over Wofford. The 10-match winning streak is the longest for WCU since winning 10 consecutive matches during the 1985 campaign.

Senior libero Meagan Sanchez won her third straight SoCon Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday after the Bristow, Va, native recorded 42 digs over seven sets for an average of 6.0 digs per set. Sanchez leads the SoCon and ranks 10th nationally with an average of 5.68 digs per set. Her 406 seasonal digs rank seventh nationally.

She is the first Catamount and the eighth player in league history to win six weekly awards in her career, and first to win weekly honors for three weeks in a row since Erin Bognar of Samford accomplished the feat in 2016. Additionally, Sanchez is the first player to win five or more weekly awards in the same season in the SoCon since Mikayla Derochie of Davidson won six Freshman of the Week honors in 2013 and is the first player in league history to win the Defensive Player of the Week award five times in the same season.

Defending SoCon regular season champion ETSU is 15-3 overall and 6-0 in the league after a 3-1 win over The Citadel on Saturday afternoon. Kaela Massey earned SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honors with 27 kills and a .302 hitting percentage. The Buccaneers lead the league in team hitting percentage and blocks.

Wednesday’s match is the 83rd all-time meeting between the schools. ETSU leads the series 45-37 after claiming both matches by 3-0 decisions in 2018.

The Catamounts wrap up the first half of the league schedule on Saturday, traveling to Samford for a 6 p.m. start.
