CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women’s basketball is hard at work during fall break preparing for the tip-off to the season in 20 days when the Catamounts host UVA-Wise at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Ramsey Center.
The Catamounts will conduct daily morning practices through Thursday before the players get to enjoy three days off to close out fall break on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
With under three weeks before the 2019-20 season begins, new Head Women’s Basketball Coach Kiley Hill continues to focus on fundamentals with his inherited squad. Lay-ups, defensive sets discipline, and shooting games were the order of the day during a Tuesday morning practice.
Western Carolina returns six players who saw action in the 2018-19 season and benefit in the return of redshirt junior Lauren LaPlant who sat out last season due to injury. The Catamounts welcome four newcomers which includes Middle Tennessee transfer Kyla Allison who will sit out the season due to transfer rules.
The Catamounts top returner is sophomore Jewel Smalls who was the 2019 media selection for SoCon Freshman of the Year. She ended last season with 330 points scored in her rookie campaign the second-most points scored by a Catamount freshman in WCU women’s basketball program history.

Hill enters his 17th year as a head coach and first at Western Carolina. He currently has 294 wins as a head coach and will look to hit 300 wins in his inaugural year at the helm of Catamount women’s basketball.
Three of Western Carolina’s first five games, to open the 2019-20 season are on the road. After hosting UVA-Wise in the home and season opener, the Catamounts have three-straight road games at North Carolina (Nov. 7), at Elon (Nov. 9) and at USC Upstate (Nov. 12). It will be a huge weekend beginning Nov. 14 as women’s basketball tips off a pair of home games, over three days, in Catamount Country. Women’s basketball hosts Campbell Nov. 14 before football hosts Samford Nov. 16 in their final home game of the season.
