Spartanburg, S.C. – For the third straight week, Western Carolina senior libero Meagan Sanchez has been named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week as conference officials announced their weekly honors on Monday afternoon.
Sanchez takes home the award for the third consecutive week, the fifth time in 2019 and sixth time overall in her career. She is the first Catamount and the eighth player in league history to win six weekly awards in her career and first to win weekly honors for three weeks in a row since Erin Bognar of Samford accomplished the feat in 2016. Additionally, Sanchez is the first player to win five or more weekly awards in the same season in the SoCon since Mikayla Derochie of Davidson won six Freshman of the Week honors in 2013, and is the first player in league history to win the Defensive Player of the Week award five times in the same season.
In two matches last week, Sanchez posted 42 digs over seven sets for an average of 6.0 digs per set. The Bristow, Va. native had a team-best 20 digs in a 3-0 win over The Citadel on Friday and 22 against Wofford in Saturday’s 3-2 victory. Sanchez leads the league and is 10th nationally with 5.53 digs per set.
Western Carolina concludes a three-match homestand against ETSU (15-3, 6-0) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before wrapping up the week at Samford on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET. WCU students that are in attendance can enjoy free food from Speedy’s Pizza, Dunkin’ Donuts and Bojangles’ while supplies last.
