Spartanburg, S.C. – Western Carolina senior libero Meagan Sanchez was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday as announced by league officials. Sanchez earns the award for the second straight week, the fourth time this season and fifth in her career.

She is the first Catamount to receive four SoCon Player of the Week awards in the same season since the league began its weekly award during the 1985 season, and the first player to win four weekly awards in the same season since Samford’s Erin Bognar accomplished the feat in 2016. Sanchez is just the 10th player in league history to win five weekly awards in her career.

Sanchez recorded 45 digs in a pair of matches last week including a 27-dig performance in a 3-2 win at Mercer on Friday. She followed that up with a match-best 18 digs in a 3-0 win at Chattanooga on Saturday. Over the course of the two matches, Sanchez averaged 5.62 digs per set.

The Bristow, Va. native leads the league and ranks 10th nationally with an average of 5.52 per set.

Western Carolina returns to the Ramsey Center this weekend, hosting The Citadel on Friday and Wofford on Saturday with both matches scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
