Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball wraps up the nonconference portion of its 2019 season this weekend as the Catamounts journey to Wilmington for the UNCW Hampton Inns Classic.
The tournament begins Friday as WCU faces Drake at Noon followed by a 4:30 p.m. contest against North Carolina A&T. The Catamounts wrap up the weekend against tournament host UNCW at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. All matches will have live stats with free live video available for Saturday’s match against UNCW.
The Catamounts are 1-0 against Drake, claiming a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs in 2014. WCU is 11-0 all-time against North Carolina A&T and 6-10 against UNCW. Western Carolina has not faced North Carolina A&T or UNCW since 2013.
Western Carolina is coming off a three-game sweep of UNC Asheville on Tuesday in its 2019 home opener. Senior Abigail Veit had a match-high 16 kills, which is the fifth straight match that she has finished with double-digit kills. Sophomore Merry Gebel recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 14 digs. Reigning Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week Meagan Sanchez contributed a match-high 17 digs.
After the weekend in Wilmington, WCU jumps into Southern Conference play next weekend. WCU plays its first four league matches on the road beginning with UNCG on Friday and Furman on Saturday.
