CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Junior Regan Ward scored her second-straight game-winning goal as Western Carolina women’s soccer knocked off visiting Radford 1-0 Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex. 

Turning Point:

In the 71st minute, Ward broke open a scoreless match scoring the lone goal of the game for Western Carolina.  

Individual Leaders

  • Ward scored the game-winning goal ending the match with two shots. 
  • Senior Mackenzie Wright came off the bench to add the assist to Ward’s goal.
  • Rookie goalkeeper Melody Mezzina registered the shutout in goal. 
  • Julia Winter and Wright each had a pair of shots in the match. 

Inside the Box Score

  • The two teams spent the first 45 minutes of the match scoreless with Western Carolina taking four shots in the first half and Radford taking two.
  • At the 71st minute, Western Carolina worked the ball down to their attacking side of the field. The Catamounts moved the ball around the left side of the field reaching Wright. She passed the ball to Ward in the front of the goal and she took a shot about 18 yards out. The ball sailed just past the Radford goalie into the top right of the net for the goal. 
  • Mezzina improved to 3-1 season fielding six shots by the Highlanders and picking up two saves. 
  • Western Carolina ended the match with 11 shots, seven in the second half. Radford had six. 

News & Notes

  • Ward’s goal against Radford was her second-straight game-winning goal.
  • Ward has scored three goals in the last two matches and a total of four for the season which is a career-high for her for most goals in a season. 
  • Mezzina leads the team with three wins in goal and also has two shutouts. She has allowed one goal over her last three starts and has given up one goal over the last 270 minutes.
  • Western Carolina’s 5-2 start is the best start for a Catamount women’s soccer team since the 2005 team opened the season 6-1.
  • Western Carolina’s win over Radford halts the Highlander’s four-match winning streak. The Catamounts game-winning goal over Radford is just the fourth goal the Highlanders have allowed this season.
  • The Catamounts were the fourth-straight SoCon team Radford has faced this season. Western Carolina is the only SoCon school to defeat the Highlanders this season. 
  • The win over Radford was Western Carolina’s second shutout on the season.
  • Western Carolina is now 4-1 at home.
