Cullowhee, N.C. – After playing its first two weekends out of state, the Western Carolina volleyball team stays in-state this week traveling to the Appalachian State Invitational on Thursday and Friday. Western Carolina faces former Southern Conference archrival Appalachian State Thursday at 6:30 p.m. before going up against Power 5 members Iowa State at Noon and NC State at 4 p.m. on Friday.

The Catamounts and Mountaineers have met 81 times in volleyball with Appalachian State holding a 50-31 edge. The teams have met twice since App left the Southern Conference at the end of the 2013-14 school year with both teams winning on its home court. Thursday is the first contest between the schools since 2016. NC State has won all previous 10 matchups against WCU, last coming in 2012 while the Catamounts and Big XII Cyclones meet for the first time.
Western Carolina is 2-4 on the year after a win over Alabama State and losses to Cal State Fullerton and Chicago State last weekend at the Windy City Invitational.
The Catamounts make their home debut on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. against mountain rival UNC Asheville. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) along with live stats.
