With the Loss …

- Western Carolina suffered its ninth-straight defeat dating back to last season when the Catamounts dropped eight-straight games after winning their first three games, which had been WCU’s best start to a season since 1976 … WCU’s last victory came on Sept. 22, 2018 – a 52-50 win over VMI in Cullowhee;

- WCU’s nine-straight losses represent the longest such winless streak since dropping 10-consecutive games back in 2012, the first season under Mark Speir;

- WCU also suffered its fourth-straight loss in the head-to-head series with Mercer after winning the first two meetings in 2014 and 2015;

Post-Game Notes:

- Mercer scored 28 points in the second quarter which was the most the Bears scored in a quarter last season as well when they scored 28 points on Oct. 20, 2018 … Mercer hung 42 points on the scoreboard in the first half alone, just one point shy of the Whitmire Stadium record held by WCU (43 points in the 1st half vs. West Virginia State in 2004);

- Mercer’s 42 first-half points were the most scored by a WCU opponent since the same Bears scored 31 points last season on Oct. 20, 2018;

- Western Carolina held Mercer scoreless in the fourth quarter after the Bears scored 49 points in the first three frames including 28 in the second quarter.

- Western Carolina redshirt senior QB Tyrie Adams broke a pair of school records in Saturday evening’s disappointing, season-opening loss at home to the Mercer Bears … Adams broke the school record for career passing yards, currently owning the record with 7,597 yards after passing for 318 yards on Saturday night ... Adams usurped former Catamount standout Troy Mitchell who ended his storied career with 7,354 yards … He also became WCU’s all-time career leader in total offense with 9,741 yards – and counting – by-passing Mitchell who had 9,397 yards;

- The 318 yards passing by Adams against Mercer marked the eighth time in his career that he has thrown for 300-or-more yards in a game … His 25 pass completions against Mercer gives him 619 for his career, just 35 completions shy of first place to surpass Mitchell who ended his career with 655 career completions … His 38 pass attempts on Saturday pushed his career total to 985, now just 66 passing attempts shy of Mitchell’s school-record 1,051 attempts;

- Adams scored a five-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, the 13th of his WCU career;

- In four career games against Mercer, Catamount QB Tyrie Adams amassed 1,718 yards of total offense for an average of 429.5 yards per game … Adams threw for 1,440 yards (360.0 per game) while rushing for 278 (69.5 per game) against the Bears’ defense;

- WR D.J. Thorpe, a converted QB, caught a career-best six passes for a career-high 130 receiving yards ... It was WCU's first 100-yard receiver since Nov. 10, 2018 when Jordan Mathis had 115 receiving yards;

- After nearly tight-roping the near sideline for a pick that was upheld as an incompletion by instant replay, WCU senior defensive back John Brannon III completed an INT late in the first quarter … Brannon then scrambled 23 yards to return the interception for a touchdown … the pick was the fifth interception of his career while tallying his second career touchdown;

- Junior linebacker Trevor Childers recorded a career-high and team-best 10 tackles against Mercer including a pair of tackles for loss … defensive lineman Adam Henderson was credited with a career-best seven tackles
