Cullowhee, N.C. – After a Southern Conference championship on the men’s side and a third-place finish by the women’s team, the Western Carolina track & field teams conclude the 2019 regular season on Sunday at the Mount Olive Last Chance Qualifier at the McDonald Sport Complex
WCU is scheduled to send five student-athletes to the event, four men and one woman. Devaniel Dale will run in the men’s 200-meter and 400-meter dash. Di’Joun Huitt is entered in the men’s triple jump. Dakota Oxendine is slated to compete in the men’s long jump and triple jump. Dakota Wright will compete in the men’s hammer throw. Christina Nikolaou will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Dale, Huitt, and Oxendine each won Southern Conference individual titles in their events.
“I’m excited about this upcoming weekend's competition,” head coach Jesse Norman stated. “These last chance meets are all about getting qualifying performances for your respective level. We'll be competing against schools that are all trying to do the same thing as us, get qualified or tune-up for your qualifying meet. I feel that our kids are geared up and ready to go for this weekend. I'm hopeful that the weather cooperates so that we can get some performances to qualify some of our bubble kids into their respective events for the regional championships.”
The event begins with the men’s 5,000-meter run at 8 a.m. Field events start at 11 a.m. with the women’s high jump. The event is scheduled to conclude with the men’s 4x400-meter relay at 6:25 p.m. Live results are available via a link on www.catamountsports.com.
Qualifiers for the 2019 NCAA East Preliminary meet will be announced in the coming weeks. The meet is scheduled for May 23-25 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
