Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Junior Brianna Plummer chopped 11 strokes of her opening round score, shooting 3-over par 75 on Monday to climb a team-best nine spots in the individual standings into a tie for 30th overall at the 2019 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship to lead Western Carolina.

The Catamounts advanced one spot in the team standings, 20 strokes better in the second round for a total of 662. WCU’s 20-stroke improvement was the best by any team in the field at the championship event.

The tournament’s final round at the par-72, 5,980-yard Moss Creek Golf Club is scheduled for 8:00 am tee times on Tuesday. Paired with golfers from Wofford and The Citadel, WCU’s scoring five will open on the back nine beginning at 8:30 am. Live scoring is available online at GolfStat.com.

Plummer opened her second round at 3-over par through the first six holes on the front nine before carding her first of four birdies, making the turn to the back at 3-over for the day – seven strokes better than what she shot Sunday on the front nine. The Shelby, N.C., native countered a bogey and a double-bogey with three birdies to return to the clubhouse even on the back and 3-over for the day, tied for 30th in the standings with a two-day score of 161.

Sophomore Maya White posted her second-consecutive round of 82 on Monday, charting 10 pars in the second round while her classmate Hazel Martin jumped six spots into a tie for 37th after 36 holes. Martin posted a second-round score of 7-over par 79, carding three birdies on Tuesday as a part of her 10-stroke improvement over the opening 18 holes. Martin is tied in par-3 scoring at 3-under (2.63) and has a team-best five birdies. Plummer is second with four birdies through two rounds, each carded on Monday.

Rounding out WCU’s scoring five are senior Shannon Heerey in 40th overall with a two-round score of 171 (86-85) and sophomore Harper Gilreath in 43rd at 177 (87-90).

First-round leader Furman stretched its lead to three strokes over a new runner-up as Chattanooga overtook Mercer by two strokes on Monday to move into second place. The Paladins posted a two-day score of 598 (296-302) while the Mocs shot 301 and 300 for a 36-hole score of 601. Mercer slipped to third overall at 603 (298-305) with ETSU (303-304=607) and UNCG (308-310=618) rounding out the top five.

Samford (313-308=621) sits in sixth, followed by Wofford (317-315=632), WCU (341-321=662) and The Citadel (333-343=676) rounding out the field.

Amongst a three-way tie for first after the opening 18 holes, Chattanooga’s Monica San Juan followed-up Sunday’s 1-under par 71 with a 2-under round of 70 for a two-round score of 141 to hold the 36-hole lead. She carries a six-stroke edge over runner-up Natalie Srinivasan of Furman at 147 (73-74) with two – Haylee Harford of Furman and Karina Kukkonen of Mercer – tied for third at 148 into Tuesday’s final round.

The winner of the SoCon Women’s Golf Championship on Tuesday will earn the league’s automatic bid to an NCAA regional.
