Cullowhee, N.C. – Inclement weather including lightning delays and thunderstorms kept the Western Carolina Catamount football team from hitting the practice field for session No. 11 on Tuesday, April 9 as originally planned. So, with the window of opportunity to get all 15 practices completed within the 34 day window, the Catamounts improvised.
WCU hit the turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field for an early morning practice session on Wednesday, April 10, working out in full pads for right at 90 minutes under the lights – just in a different capacity, hitting the turf before sunrise.
The two longest periods of Wednesday morning’s practice were for individual position work and a team install period with the offense and defense working separately. The two units came together for a perimeter drill with light contact with the wide receivers and secondary while the offensive and defensive line squared-off at the other end of the field. The skill players also went at it in the seven-on-seven “skelly” drills.
Wednesday did include a pair of live scrimmage sets for roughly 20 minutes. Running back Connell Young stood out during the live segments, rushing for a trio of touchdowns – two during the “Play Ball” portion and again during the practice-ending red-zone period from just inside the 10-yard line.
Wednesday’s practice opened the final five sessions for the Catamount football team this spring. WCU is slated to return to practice on Thursday afternoon in shells before working out in helmets and spider pads on Friday afternoon in the 13th session of the season. The final fully-padded practice is scheduled for Saturday morning at 10:30 am with the final spring drill session scheduled for Tuesday, April 16.
Unless otherwise noted, each WCU spring practice is open to the public. It is respectfully requested, though, that spectators observe from the stadium seating area and avoid being either on the field or the sidelines.
