CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina head track & field coach Jesse Norman announced today the addition of Joseph Davis to the Catamount coaching staff. Davis will work with the multi-events, the throwers and jumpers.

"I'm excited to announce the hiring of Joseph Davis to our staff,” Norman stated. “We had numerous candidates and felt with his experience, he was the best fit for the program moving forward.  He's cut his teeth in the coaching world working with pole vaulters and multi-event athletes.  As he moves forward with our vertical jumps and throws group, I feel that our student-athletes will benefit greatly from his experience.  He's coached an 8,000+ point student-athlete in the decathlon which was a meet record for the National Championships.  I'm excited to see how our current athletes will benefit from someone with his experience.  Joe and his wife, Morgan, will be a great fit for the Catamount family."

Davis arrives in Cullowhee after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach for vertical jumps and multi-event groups at Texas A&M Commerce. While at Texas A&M Commerce, Davis coached 2017 and 2018 NCAA Division II Decathlon National Champion Florian Obst, who set a Division II meet record with 8,005 points in the event. Five student-athletes set school records while under Davis’ tutelage with the Lions men’s team earning two indoor and one outdoor conference title.

Prior to his tenure at Texas A&M Commerce, Davis was a graduate assistant as well as a volunteer assistant coach at Clemson from 2013-16 where he worked with the jumps group, planned travel and prepared the facility for home meets. While at Clemson, the Tigers won the 2015 women’s indoor and outdoor ACC team titles and guided six All-Americans.

A 2012 graduate of Virginia Tech, Davis began his coaching career in 2012-13 as a volunteer assistant coach for multi’s and pole vault. He was a two-time first team All-American in 2011 and 2012.

The Catamounts are off this week and return to action April 5-6 at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala.
