Cullowhee, N.C. – On the strength of his career-best, fourth-place finish at the GCU Invitational last week in Arizona, Western Carolina freshman Louis Theys was today named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week. Selections are made and announced by the SoCon office from nominations submitted by the media relations staffs of each member institution.

Theys is the sixth Catamount men’s golfer to be honored by the league office since the conference started handing out weekly plaudits back in 2001. All told, WCU ranks sixth in the SoCon with 12 weekly honors with Theys’ honor representing the first of his career, the first for the Catamounts this season, and the first since teammate Jackson Bishop collected the award in early April 2018.

Theys posted his career-best, 54-hole score with a 6-under par 207 at the GCU Invitational, a 112-golfer, 18 team field event hosted by Grand Canyon University at its par-71 championship golf course. Along the way, the Villers-Perwin, Belgium, native carded rounds of 1-under par, 70; a career-low round of 3-under par, 68; and a 2-under par round of 69. His three-round score of 207 is the best by a Catamount golfer this season while also ranking tied for the 10th-best, 54-hole score on record, matching a trio of tournament scores turned in by former Catamount J.T. Poston between 2013 and 2015.

Combined, Theys finished the tournament tied for fifth in par-3 scoring at 1-under par (2.92) and was tied for 10th collectively in par-4 scoring at 2-under (3.94).

Tied for 11th in the individual standings after 36 holes, Theys climbed seven spots in the final round to pace WCU by finishing in a tie for fourth-place to conclude the squad’s spring break trip out west. His fourth-place finish is the best by a WCU golfer this season, joining classmate Tumi Kúld with the only other top 10 showing to date.

Western Carolina returns to action April 1-2 at the Wofford Intercollegiate, hosted by the Terriers at the Country Club of Spartanburg. The 54-hole tournament includes 36 holes on Monday, April 1 and the third round of 18 on Tuesday, April 2.
