NEWARK, N.J. – Western Carolina women’s basketball dropped the final game of the NJIT Thanksgiving Classic 89-66 Sunday at the Wellness and Event Center. 

The Catamounts started the game strong, at one point leading 6-2, but a late first period run by North Alabama in the first period, and a 26-10 scoring output in the second put a halt on WCU’s bid to hand the Lions their first loss.

Turning Point

  • North Alabama outscored Western Carolina 26-10 in the second period and ballooned a lead the Catamounts could not claw back from.
  • Individual Leaders
  • Gabby Smith’s 13 points led the Catamounts just missing her third straight double-double with nine rebounds.
  • Jewel Smalls had 10 points hitting two three-pointers.
  • Jada Miller scored seven of her nine points in the game in the final three minutes of the game.

  • North Alabama scored 20 or more points in three of the four periods.

  • With nine three-pointers hit by North Alabama, it halts a streak of four straight games the Catamounts allowed an opponent to hit 11 three-pointers in a game.
  • With Smalls and Smith each scoring in double figures in the game, the pair are tied for most games with double-digit scoring at three each.
