Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina outside hitter Abigail Veit was today named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 3 volleyball team selected and released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Veit is just the third Catamount volleyball player to earn Academic All-District honors dating back to 2002, joining Carrie Minogue (2010) and Sara Komosinski (2002). She was one of three players from the SoCon to earn the All-District 3 honor and one of four from the league recognized including one in District 4. Veit is now eligible for Academic All-America honors looking to become the fourth Catamount volleyball player all-time to receive the plaudits – and the first since Ramsey Herron (1998 & 1999).
On the court, Veit ranks second on the WCU team in kills with 249 (2.47 kills/set), just behind SoCon All-Freshman team selection Merry Gebel. Including a season-high 16 kills against Wofford in early October, Veit has recorded double-digit kills in 13 of the squad’s matches this season. With 277 digs, she is third on the Catamount squad averaging 2.74 digs per set and has tallied 28 total blocks. Combined, Veit has eight double-doubles performances this season.
Through three seasons, Veit has 760 career kills (2.36 kills/set), 904 digs (2.81 digs/set) and 88 total blocks including 15 solo
A junior from Cary, N.C., Veit boasts a 3.97 cumulative grade point average while double majoring in management and innovational leadership and entrepreneurship. She was named to the 2017 SoCon Fall Academic All-Conference team and was also a 2016-17 SoCon Honor Roll and Commissioner’s Medal recipient following her freshman year.
Eighth-seeded Western Carolina opens play in the 2018 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship on Friday morning in Greensboro, N.C., at 9:30 am against the No. 9 seed The Citadel.
