Spartanburg, S.C. – Freshman Amy Wooten and sophomore Hazel Martin carded matching rounds of 7-over par, 79, on Monday to lead the Western Carolina women’s golf team at the Terrier Intercollegiate, hosted by Wofford at the par-72, 6,012-yard Country Club of Spartanburg. WCU sits in 14th-place overall entering Tuesday’s final round of the 36-hole event.

Paired with golfers from USC Beaufort and North Alabama, WCU’s scoring five tees off between the 14th and 16th holes in Tuesday morning’s 9:30 am shotgun start. Live scoring is available online through BirdieFire.com.

Opening on the back nine, Wooten carded a team-best 12 pars on Monday with five bogeys and one double-bogey for the 7-over score. The Clinton, N.C., native closed her round with three consecutive pars. Martin made the turn to the front nine at 4-over par with six pars, two bogeys, and one double-bogey. A second, double-bogey on the par-4 second left her at 6-over par before consecutive birdies on the fourth and fifth holes had her at 2-over with four holes to play. However, the Brisbane, Australia product bogeyed three of her final four to shoot 7-over, 79, for the round.

Sophomore Maya White had one birdie in her opening round, sitting tied for 58th overall at 82, while sophomore Cameron Wood and junior Brianna Plummer are tied for 84th overall after first round scores of 90 with Plummer also carding a birdie on Monday.

High Point leads Georgia Southern by two strokes, 297-to-299, after the first round with local-based USC Upstate sitting in third at 302, five strokes off the pace. Appalachian State sits in fourth at 303 with Winthrop rounding out the top five at 304. Fellow Southern Conference member Samford (311) is seventh with tournament-host Wofford (312) in eighth, while a fourth SoCon school, The Citadel (334) is 16th.

Wofford’s Becca Earl paces the 90-golfer field by a stroke over a two-way tie between Chelsea Dantonio of Winthrop and Ansley Bowman of Georgia Southern. Earl was the only golfer to post a round under par at 1-under 71 while Dantonio and Bowman both shot even-par, 72.
