Cullowhee, N.C. – On the heels of an undefeated weekend, the Western Carolina volleyball team remains at home this weekend, welcoming Samford and Chattanooga to the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center.
The Catamounts and Bulldogs will battle at 6 p.m. Friday with a Noon start time for Saturday’s contest against Chattanooga, which will be the first leg of a doubleheader with the Catamount football team against the Mocs. Friday’s match will air on ESPN+ with live stats available for both matches on www.catamountsports.com.
Western Carolina is 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the Southern Conference thanks to a pair of 3-1 wins over Furman and Wofford last weekend.
Junior Abigail Veit was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, becoming the first Catamount to earn a weekly honor since classmate Meagan Sanchez claimed the Defensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 12, 2016. Veit finished with 27 kills, a team-best 37 digs and two block assists, averaging 3.38 kills and 4.62 digs per set. On Friday, Veit recorded her second double-double of 2018 with 11 kills and 16 digs. During Saturday’s win over Wofford, Veit set a new career-high with 21 digs along with a season-high 16 kills, an assist and one block assist. On Wednesday, Veit was named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week.
Samford is 10-11 overall and 5-2 in the conference after a 3-2 loss at Chattanooga on Wednesday evening. The Bulldogs are led offensively by senior Krista Boesing’s 318 kills.
Chattanooga enters the weekend with an 8-12 record overall and 4-3 mark in league play following Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Samford. Jaquelyn Langhaim is the reigning SoCon Offensive Player of the Week.
Samford leads the all-time series against Western Carolina 21-7. Western Carolina leads the all-time series against Chattanooga 41-40, including a 22-13 mark in matches played in Cullowhee.
The Catamounts conclude the home portion of the 2018 schedule next weekend against The Citadel on Friday and Mercer on Sunday.
