Cullowhee, N.C. – For the third year in a row, Western Carolina quarterback Tyrie Adams has collected the Southern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Month honor for September it was announced today by the league office. Adams helped lead WCU to its best start to a season since 1976 with the squad’s 3-0 opening to 2018 before garnering SoCon Offensive Player of the Week accolades for the final week of the month.

Last fall, Adams became the first Catamount football player to collect multiple monthly awards from the league office in a career, adding his third monthly honor this September. It’s just the fourth monthly offensive award for WCU since its inception in 2003 – three tallied by Adams.

Adams accounted for 1,375 yards of total offense and a SoCon-leading 14 combined touchdowns during the month of September including having already rushed for more scores in the opening month of the season than he had in two full seasons prior with four TDs on the ground. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native paced WCU with 352 rushing yards in the month, averaging 88.0 rushing yards per game. Completing 64-percent of his passes, Adams was 76-of-119 in September for 1,023 yards and 10 passing touchdowns, fashioning a 160.45 pass efficiency rating in the month.

Adams has led a Catamount offensive unit that enters October ranked sixth nationally in total offensive production with a conference-leading 521.8 yards per game average and is 11th in scoring with a SoCon-best 37.8 points per game.

In the 2018 season-opener, Adams rushed the Catamounts to victory with a single-game career-high three rushing touchdowns including two in the decisive fourth quarter in the 33-26 victory over the Newberry Wolves. Against Gardner-Webb, Adams eclipsed the century mark in both rushing (106 yards) and passing (108 yards) as the Catamounts chewed up 475 yards of offense including a season-best 325 on the ground in the 28-10 victory.

Adams rushed for a season-high 117 yards and a touchdown while tossing three TD passes in the wild Southern Conference shootout with VMI accounting for 346 total offensive yards in the victory.

Most recently, Adams was honored as the conference’s offensive player of the week and a national STATS FCS honorable mention for top offensive player after accounting for 472 yards of total offense at Furman. He recorded his second career 400+ yard passing performance, just missing a career benchmark with 424 yards and a career-high matching five touchdown passes against the Paladins. Adams’ 424-yard passing performance is just one of 12, 400-yard passing games in the NCAA FCS this season to date.

After five weeks of the regular season, Adams ranks second in the league in total offense with an average of 343.8 yards per game – a mark that ranks him fourth in the country at the NCAA Division I FCS level. Overall, he ranks third in the SoCon in rushing offense as a QB averaging 88.0 yards per contest – 35th overall nationally but fourth among quarterbacks – and he is fourth in the SoCon in passing at 255.8 yards per game, 25th nationally. His 10 passing touchdowns are second only to Samford’s Devlin Hodges at the conference level.

Western Carolina travels to Birmingham, Ala., this Saturday, Oct. 6 for a 12:30 pm CT / 1:30 pm ET kickoff against the preseason favorite Samford Bulldogs. The game can be seen on ESPN3 with the Catamount Sports Network radio broadcast scheduled for a 12:30 pm ET air time.
